The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are viewed as one of the main contributors to global climate change and the importance of GHG emissions reduction is widely recognized. With the current 34 billion tons per year of CO2 emissions, the Earth’s CO2 remaining budget of 640 billion will be exhausted in less than 20 years. Researchers believe that when this budget is spent.
While the reduction of GHG emissions has been on the top of the priorities list for a while, the year 2020 became a remarkable one. The large corporates across many industries became more practical about it and started making landmark decisions.

Traditional energy producers, like BP, announced a new strategy to accommodate their goal to become a net-zero carbon company.

The largest corporation pledged funds for developing technologies that tackle CO2 emissions problem. Microsoft plans to become carbon negative by 2030 and launched $1bln climate innovation fund.

Amazon announced $2bln Climate Pledge Fund to invest in companies building products, services, and technologies to decarbonize the economy and protect the planet

Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) updated investors on plans to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050 or sooner

According to calculation based on data from DOE, EIA, and corporate reporting, out of almost 10 Gigatons of the Scope 1-2 emissions, the petroleum refining industry produces over 1,000,000,000 tons of CO2. Approximately 160 million tons of CO2 produced because of inefficient heat exchange process. Another 280 million tons comes from inefficient equipment.
